Joi Ito, World of Warcraft, and Twitter

Saturday, August 8th, 2009

Joi’s description of how Teamspeak influenced his perception changed the way I thought about emerging communication. After several small attempts to recreate the experience over the past year, I still have yet to experience the full immersion of this form of aural shared consciousness.

When I talk to people about Twitter that still question what it is, let alone what it does, I have an overwhelming urge to focus on the hive aspect of the community. I agree that the voices of those individuals talking about their breakfast are disruptive – but the longer you listen to the stream, the quicker they fall into the shadows.

It’s less about the 140 characters, than it is about the 44 million people – each an active part of  a live 24/7 experience.

With so much attention on Twitter Strategies for small business, growing followers, getting your voice heard, and measuring impact, I think we can sometimes lose track of how truly remarkable this form of communication is. I know I do.

Age of Conversation 2 – An excerpt

Monday, June 9th, 2008

Having collaborated on the first “Age of Conversation” book, I saw the opportunity to help write the second edition as a method for launching the idea of a conversation on social media a step forward. Last year, my chapter titled “It Is Not Enough To Simply Listen,” focused upon the need for brands to embrace the participation element of online conversation. This year, I chose to take the long view of persistent interaction and forecast the ramifications of the trail of digital artifacts we distribute over time.

An interview conducted in Second Life with my friend, Duc Ly

Ryan Barrett over at at CheapThrills offered to collect quotes from authors’ submissions. I wanted to post the quote from my article, titled, “A Trail of Digital Breadcrumbs,” here at Collaborative Ideation.

A Trail of Digital Breadcrumbs
The Age of Conversation II

” … every observable action is an artifact of who we are and how we interact with the world. By making public our hearts and minds in the language of shared data, we have the potential to not only interact with the present; we may at some point converse with the future.”

As a release date draws closer, I will share the news. I look forward to reading the full submissions written by the rest of the authors this fall.

Tumbling Digital Breadcrumbs: The day after SOBCon 08′

Monday, May 5th, 2008

I experienced an amazing conference this weekend. I met some terrific people, and learned a great deal more about what it means to be a contributor to the digital commons.

Collaborative Ideation will be going through a number of changes in the next few weeks based upon what I learned. I am still a bit overwhelmed, a sentiment I’ve heard elsewhere, from the intensity of support and encouragement shared between this year’s attendees.

My voice was missing from much of this blog. I never really considered it as such until this weekend – instead it was a sandbox for journaling my online exploration of social interaction through the emergent online landscape.

Injecting “I” into CollaborativeIdeation creates a more meaningful artifact – from a former tumbling trail of digital breadcrumbs.
